Who says only children can run away to join the circus? Ginger Howell became interested in circus arts when she was a student at Wellesley College, and began attending the circus club, GLOW, as well as taking classes with Simply Circus. She graduated with a BA in Theatre in 2008, and received her MA from Emerson College in 2011. She recently wrote and directed the show Escher’s Dream, an hour-long circus show, as part of her master’s thesis.

Ginger first started working with a cup of water on the lyra as a drill—if the water spilled, it meant her transitions needed to be smoother. She moved on to a wine glass because it was more convenient to hold it between her toes, and not have to have a hand free all the time. By the time she no longer needed the glass to correct her technique, she was enjoying it too much to stop working with it. After all, what could be more fun than flying through the air with a nice glass of wine? She created the character “Vinia” for her wine-glass routines.
